Starry-Crossed Lovers

Starry-Crossed Lovers - 6" X 6" Oil on Panel

I caught a wonderful moment with this couple standing near the Starry Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Surprisingly, the crowds tapered off for a moment and I was able to get this snapshot. I'm always amazing at how much appeal this painting gets. People just flock to it. I often wonder what Vincent would think about all this attention. I think he would be really proud that people love his work so much.

Wheatfields With Cypresses

"Wheatfields with Cypresses" - Vincent Van Gogh - MMA - NYC

I was so fortunate that I was able to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC last week. I'm so inspired by Karin Jurik's paintings and style, I decided to do my own A to Z paintings but instead of artists, I'm going to do art, meaning titles of paintings, A to Z. I'm going to take some liberties like removing the preposition, a, an, the, otherwise that may be nearly impossible to find. And I'm not going to go in alphabetical order. I'll find a painting I like for a letter and paint it. Yes, it will be a challenge but I love challenges and this will really motivate me to paint every day. I intend to make a book out of the very best ones.
As I've said in the past, Van Gogh is my very favorite artist. I noticed what a broad appeal he has at the museums. Crowds of people flocked around his paintings, while Gaugin and Pissarro, hung over there all lonely and rejected. I wonder what they would think about that if they were alive today. Of course, Monet's paintings were very popular too.

Make Hay While The Sun Shines

Make Hay While The Sun Shines - 16" X 20" - Oil on Canvas
My husband said the title of this painting to me the other day and inspired me to paint some hay bales. In the expressionistic style of Van Gogh, love the thick, luscious paint and moving it around the canvas. Really fun!

Center of Attention

Center of Attention - 6" X 6" Oil on Gessoboard panel
Having fun doing quick paintings this week. Doing the 10-min apple exercises in the morning and then set up this still life and it took me 45 minutes. Not bad, it comes easier with practice! Wasn't sure if I wanted to sell this one, I LOVE the colors so much! It goes with my kitchen, but it gives me an excuse to paint another one!

Coneflower

Coneflower - Oil on Gessoboard Panel - 6" X 6"

Inspired by Van Gogh and post-impressionism. Love the german expressionists and fauvist like Gabrielle Munter and Kandinsky. But Van Gogh is my fav. From Doctor Who episode, Vincent and the Doctor, "He transformed the pain from his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before and perhaps no one will again."

Cabbage Farm Somers Wisconsin

Cabbage Farm - Oil on Canvas - 16" X 20"
This is the first painting I've done after my beloved puppy, Maggie, passed. It's nice to get back into the swing after a long hiatus. It always makes me feel better. I just wanted to have fun and move paint around the canvas like Van Gogh did! It was such a joy and pleasure to create this piece and it only took me an hour! It practically painted itself. I heard that Van Gogh took all his pain and heartache and turned it into something beautiful on the canvas. That's how I felt. I wanted to create something beautiful.
Bid on it now starting at only $45!

My sweet little puppy, Maggie

I'm sorry for not posting in a while. It's been a rough couple of weeks. My beloved puppy, Maggie, got very sick. She had a mass cell tumor on her rear left leg. It got very infected and despite our best efforts, she passed away on Thursday, Sept. 16. She was 8 years old. I had her since she was 6 weeks old, just a little puppy. She helped me through some rough times back then. She was the sweetest little girl I could have ever asked for and I miss her terribly.

My little pug, Maggie.

High Head Road - Outside of PTown Painting #1

Outside of Ptown - High Head Road - 9" X 12" oil on Ampersand Gessoboard panel
Day 1 of Painting Atmosphere and Impressionist Landscapes in Provincetown, MA. Mary Giammarro was my instructor. She paints and teaches painting in the Hawthorne traditional style. We used a 1.5 in putty knife from the hardware store! (see below) I was skeptical at first but now I love it. Very loose expressionist style, so much fun and so vibrant! Stay tuned for more paintings to come. Click below to bid in the auction on dailypaintworks.com starting at only $15!

My Plein Air Setup

I thought I'd show my set up for plein air painting. It's working out really well, especially for the smaller paintings. I found an aluminum box that I got some colored pencils in a while back and use that to keep paint in. I really like this Sienna plein air paint box! It's the all-in-one version. (See photo below)
I keep my paints and brushes in the drawer underneath my palette. My palette colors are as follows:
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Yellow Lemon
  • Cadmium Red
  • Permanent Rose
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Manganese Violet
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Raw Umber
  • Lots of Titanium White
I use Winsor & Newton's Artisan Oil Painting Medium and Gamsol for my thinner.

"...Like A Merry-Go-Round..."

"Summer...It's Like A Merry-Go-Round..." - 6" X 6" Oil on Gessoboard
Inspired by a line in the song, Magic, by the Cars, circa 1984. I used a photo reference of me when I was 3 years old riding the merry-go-round at Six Flags Great America in Chicago, Illinois. I have a picture of my 3-year-old son on the same merry-go-round taken last year. Ah, how time flies! :)
